Another year done and dusted! We can’t quite believe 2018 is nearly over, summer and its heatwave feel like just weeks ago! It has been an incredibly exciting year for everyone here. With Bluefruit steadily growing and evolving, we’re enjoying great relationships with our long-term clients and working with new clients on amazing embedded and IoT projects. It’s not only been a great year for Bluefruit, the Cornwall tech sector as a whole seems to be on the up and we literally mean up!
Before we move into the New Year, we’d like to share a few of our favourite moments from 2018:
1. Bluefruit turned 18!
Founded 18 years ago by Paul Massey and his dog in a small studio in St Agnes, Bluefruit is today one of Cornwall’s fastest growing tech companies. To celebrate those 18 years of delivering outstanding software, we threw a massive birthday party at Heartlands. Cakes, a bouncy castle, finger food, laser tag, lots of sunshine and even some drinks as we reached the drinking age – we had it all covered.
2. Cornwall is taking off – literally!
There is only one direction for Cornwall – UP! This July, during the Farnborough Airshow, Spaceport Cornwall team announced their partnership with Virgin Orbit to make Cornwall the home for horizontal satellite launches within the UK. This also means a Cornwall based location for Virgin Orbit, bringing jobs and opportunity to Cornwall and contributing to the larger strategic plan to create a £1 billion Kernow space economy. How exciting!!!! On 1st April we also managed to send a tiny little Cornish rover to explore unknown Martian territory.
3. Bluefruit continue to grow!
In the past 12 months, we’ve hired over 12 new members of staff, taking the company to a total of 54 employees. Across all roles, from Software Test Engineers, Software Engineers, Senior Software Engineers to Client Development, we pride ourselves in delivering the best quality software and service to our clients. In 2019 we are confident to continue to hire more people – espcially Software Engineers.
4. Our Work!
This was the year of medical compliance for Bluefruit, with over 70% of our work focused on software solutions for medical and pharmaceutical products. This includes work with international businesses like Elga LabWater. We are also working hard to retain local relationships and continue our success with our long-term clients, like local partner Watson Marlow. Bluefruit has been working closely with the team at Watson Marlow to provide software across all of their award-winning innovative pump range.
Caitlin Gould, Business Development Director, stresses:
“Making clients happy is at the core of what we do, and we work very hard to deliver the kind of results that cause clients to come back again and again.”
Well done, Bluefruities!
5. Women of Silicon Roundabout
Learn, Empower, Lead….and Laugh! In the summer, a group of intrepid Bluefruit colleagues made their way to London (aka “the big smoke”) to join the Women of Silicon Roundabout conference. The conference was all about inspiring, celebrating and connecting women working in technology. Coming from different Bluefruit departments (Tester, Developer, Marketing and Sales/Business Development) we had one thing in common: to learn more about the newest trends and insights in technology, and especially how we, as women, can shape, work and lead in these exciting fields. Being part of this conference alongside with 4,000 other Tech women from all around the world was truly inspiring.
