It’s National Apprenticeship Week! Let’s inspire… and be inspired
At Bluefruit we are firm believers in the power of apprenticeships. We’ve had apprentices for over 4 years and a number of our current employees have come through our apprenticeship program.
Now it’s your turn
Bluefruit is looking for 3 new Software Apprentices! This could be your pathway into a great career in Tech at a leading software specialist based in Redruth, Cornwall. Within this two-year apprenticeship, you will receive work-based training into many aspects of Bluefruit’s software development and software testing activities, working as an active member of one of our current software teams, contributing on real client projects. We believe this is fundamental to understanding how to progress onto writing and creating high-quality software and getting a job in the tech industry.
You will also receive structured training on coding in C++ and how to implement software solutions using an Agile process. The close-knit nature of our teams means you will get constant support and you will be encouraged to be proactive in all aspects of team activities. Outside of the office, we’ll send you on a couple of away days to other companies within the Cornish digital sector so that you can see how they work.
We know that selecting the right place for an apprenticeship can be hard and we thought it might help to share the continued journey from our current cohort of apprentices to see how they’ve got on within the role.
Catching up with our current apprentices
Over the past two years, our apprentices have continued to grow both in their jobs and in their confidence as productive members of a team. In the past, we shared a bit about their journey on becoming a Software Engineer and Test Engineer, their motivation and daily work here at Bluefruit. Now near the end of their apprenticeships, we thought it would be good to learn what their number 1 achievement or “ah ha” moment was. Here are some of their proudest moments:
Jordan Barkway (Currently a Test Engineer on Team Rocket):
“My number one achievement is having the confidence to be able to do public speaking! I have never been the one to stand up in front of people to present but over the past year and a half I have broken boundaries and now am talking at a major conference and present at local schools! This has furthered me in wanting to become a STEM ambassador so that I can help introduce young people into technology! Here at Bluefruit, I’m proud of having the opportunity to take the lead on running mobbing sessions (a form a group coding) for my team on internal projects and having the chance to pair with senior engineers to continue to learn new skills.”
Elliot Paull (Currently a Junior Software Engineer on Team Indigo):
“My proudest moment during my apprenticeship at Bluefruit would definitely be receiving the “Apprentice of the year” award in the Digital and IT category at the Cornwall Apprenticeship Awards 2018. I was so happy that my colleagues were happy enough with my work to nominate me for the award.”
Ian Businge (Currently a Test Engineer on Team Indigo):
“I have really enjoyed my time as a software apprentice at Bluefruit Software. It has been challenging, but fun, fully rewarding and totally amazing. My “ah ha!” moment was the first time I made an LED flash off of a microcontroller! As one of my teammates told me, There’s no better reward than a flashing LED! I’ve also had a chance to work on a very exciting and complex medical device, which has been a real eye-opener into how hard it is to ensure quality on such an ambitious project in a highly regulated sector.“
